Who are we?
SILABE (Simian Laboratory Europe) is a new platform created in January 2011 resulting from the 30-year expertise of the Center of Primatology of the Strasbourg University.
SILABE offers several services on non-human primates (supply of biological samples, provision of primates, pre-clinical studies) to companies and industries in the field of healthcare.
Silabe is settled in a 30-acre site within an old fortress assigned to Strasbourg University that offers unique surrounding and infrastructures to monkey colonies. Social housing, enriched environment and outdoor access are some of our features that made the facilities internationally renowned. Care and use of animals is operated under optimal conditions regarding European standards and animal welfare concerns.
In 2011, SILABE can host 500 primates. The accommodation facilities will be extended in 2012 to host 1300 primates. A quality management system insures the adequacy of products and services proposed by SILABE, according to the ISO 9001 standards.
Our team:
Veterinarians, ethologists and researchers make their expertise of the primate model at your disposal to insure the good coordination of your protocols.
Our technicians are specifically educated for the care and manipulation of primates.

The services proposed by Silabe are wide:
Silabe can supply biological samples from primates such as blood, plasma, serum, urine, tissues or organs. All samples are collected according to your specifications.
Silabe can also supply non-human primates coming from colonies of our breeding activity or from certified breeders in Mauritius, Asia or Barbados. For monkeys coming from non-European country, they undergo quarantine according to local laws to insure the sanitary status of the animals.
Silabe can provide you monkeys from 4 species: Cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta), green monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus) and marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). We have at our disposal several colonies constituted of different age group (juvenile, adult or aged animals).

To assess the antiepileptic effect of new AEDs, SynapCell develops chronic animal models of partial and generalized epilepsy.
Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is one of the most common form of partial epilepsy and represents a major challenge in the clinical management of seizures.
The MTLE Mouse model is a chemically induced model of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. A unique intrahippocampal injection of kainate induces an initial status epilepticus followed by a latent period during which the epileptogenesis takes place, associated with an ipsilateral hippocampal sclerosis. This model is resistant to classical AEDs within safety margins while new AEDs have shown good efficacy.
Altogether, MTLE mouse reproduces behavioural, electroclinical and histopathological features of human MTLE and represents a unique tool to qualify new AEDs.
The GAERS (Genetic Absence Epilepsy Rats from Strasbourg) is a genetic model of generalized absence epilepsy that displays the EEG (spontaneous recurrent generalized bilateral SWDs), behavioural and pharmacological features of human absence seizures. Thanks to its high predictivity and face validity, the GAERS has become a gold standard to study both the anti-absence and aggravating effects of an AED in development.
SynapCell offers with the MTLE mouse and the GAERS models powerful tools for preclinical evaluation and predictive clinical validation of new AEDs, using clinical like protocols and customized solutions.
Our in vitro solutions allow the assessment of the activity profile of your drug candidates on neuronal network through integrated models on acute / organotypic hippocampal slices, various experimental conditions and multisite recordings, using MEA technology. Our solutions include neuroprotective effects of compounds in excitotoxic conditions and evaluation of neuroplasticity (LTP in WT or mutant models).
